Game 5 of the Bruins vs. Canadiens series heads back to Boston with the Bruins riding the momentum of winning a hard fought defensive battle in game 4 to tie the series at two games apiece.

The story line of game 5 reads more like something out of a Hollywood blockbuster than the grind-it-out reality of NHL playoff hockey. It starts like this: A kid named Matt Fraser gets the call up to the NHL from the organization’s AHL affiliate in Providence. He hasn’t even played an NHL game yet, much less a critical playoff game in a series that could very easily hinge on his first game up with the big boys. The game is a goaltender’s duel, going scoreless through the first three periods, and then something magical happens.

Truth be told, the goal Matt Fraser punched past Canadiens goalie Carey Price would have looked a lot prettier if Hollywood were putting on the show. As it turned out, the goal isn’t likely to make any highlight reels. Fraser just happened to be in the right place at the right time as the puck squirmed out of the scrum in front of the Montreal net and he managed to get his stick on the puck just enough to punch it in and light the red light. Game over, Bruins win 1-0 in overtime and tie the Canadiens vs. Bruins series at two games apiece.

There’s no promise his game 4 heroics will keep him from being sent back to Providence before the 2014 Stanley Cup playoffs are over, but it’s certainly not a bad way to start an NHL career. Heck, if he never plays another game in the NHL, he’ll be able to tell his grandkids about the time he was the only one on a mighty Boston Bruins team able to slip the puck past the Montreal Canadiens’ net minder in game 4 of the Bruins vs. Canadiens series back in 2014.

For now, according to an AP report, this is what Fraser had to say:

“It’s something I dreamed about many times on the outdoor rinks growing up. It’s every kid’s dream to score in overtime… words can’t even describe that feeling.”
