Our list of new video game releases for the week of April 13, 2014 consists of very few new games. The new releases spread evenly between new Virtual Console releases and next-gen versions of games from previous systems.
The biggest new video game release for the week is awarded to Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. Much has been said of this MMO that nearly sank Square-Enix. Ironically, FFXIV put Square-Enix in a similar position as when it made the original Final Fantasy, a game that was to be their last project before closing.
After one of the most expensive and disastrous launches in the company’s history, the game was scrapped and rebuilt from the ground up. At GDC 2014, the director of the game, Naoki Yoshida, gave a talk highlighting the 3 main reasons the original game was a failure: Obsession with graphics, lack of Post-World of Warcraft experience in the MMO genre, and a mentality that all problems could be fixed in a patch. Not only did his team succeed in an astonishingly short time span, but the game is now turning a tidy profit for Square Enix with over 500k active users per day.
Another new release worth mentioning on our list is the final bit of DLC for Borderlands 2, a game that originally launched in September of 2012. Developer Gearbox has produced a total of 12 DLC expansions for the game over the 19 months since the game’s launch. Sir Hammerlock Versus the Son of Crawmerax is a call back to the original Borderlands DLC, The Secret Armory of General Knoxx in which the player destroyed a giant worm creature known as the Crawmerax. Crawmerax Jr. is looking for revenge on Lilith, Brick and Mordercai who are visiting Sir Hammerlock’s tropical island get away.
Other new video game releases for the week including some notable Virutal Console releases for the Nintendo Wii U and 3DS. JRPG fans will delight in Golden Sun being available and Mario fans will enjoy the beloved Super Mario Bros. 3 for both the Wii U and 3DS.
