Sofia Coppola: ‘Little Mermaid’ Movie Likely To Be Dark, Not At All Like Disney

Sofia Coppola’s Little Mermaid movie adaption is likely to be quite a bit more scary and dark compared to the Disney version, and it’s not because she’s in talks to be the director.

In a related report by The Inquisitr, we first got word of a live action Little Mermaid movie back in the summer of 2013. But it turns out there are two movie projects in the works. Shana Feste, the writer of Country Strong, is working on her own adaptation of a live action Little Mermaid film. Sony Pictures has signed on to bring the adaptation from Carolyn Turgeon’s Mermaid: A Twist on the Classic Tale to life.

So will the Little Mermaid movie directed by Sofia Coppola make three? This new project is being produced by Universal Pictures and Working Title, and is said to be based upon the original tale told by Hans Christian Andersen. So while, yes, this story would still feature a mermaid princess giving up her legs to chase after a human prince, it’s likely to be much more dark and depressing. I won’t spoil what happens in the original tale, but let’s just say it’s a Disney happily ever after tale.

The other reason we know its likely to be very dark is because of the screenwriter. Normally, Sofia Coppola is known for directing movies where she also wrote the screenplay. To give you an idea on how dark it’s intended to be, previous script drafts were attempted by the authors of Fifty Shades Of Grey and Shame. But this time the Little Mermaid is being written by Caroline Thompson, whose credits include Tim Burton projects like Edward Scissorhands and The Corpse Bride.

So far nothing much is known about the project other than the fact that they plan on moving quickly. No one knows if the leading lady will be a red head or if they’ll shoot for a different appearance than the look Disney went with. Otherwise, some reports comment on how this will be the first Sofia Coppola will be directing a movie where visual effects will be a large component of the plan.

What do you think about Sofia Coppola’s Little Mermaid being dark and edgy?
