Demi Lovato wasn’t at all impressed with Lady Gaga’s recent performance at SXSW.
For those who don’t follow Mother Monster’s peculiar antics, the singer recently performed at the annual music and film festival in Austin, Texas. During her gig at Stubb’s BBQ, Gaga gave friend and “vomit painter” Millie Brown permission to puke neon green all over her. Not surprisingly, the stunt received a fair amount of media attention.
One person thought the act was in poor taste was fellow pop star Demi Lovato. In her humble opinion, Brown’s bizarre antics were nothing more than a way to glamorize bulimia. Lovato previously struggled with an eating disorder, a problem she reportedly addressed during her stint in rehab.
Demi Lovato addressed Lady Gaga’s controversial vomit painter in a series of recent posts on Twitter. She also engaged in some healthy debate with a few folks who disagreed with her opinion.
Sad… As if we didn’t have enough people glamorizing eat disorders already. Bottom line, it’s not “cool” or “artsy” at all.

After calling Lady Gaga’s gig and Millie Brown’s vomit painting into question, Lovato admitted that she’s still very much a fan of the “Applause” singer. Just because Demi Lovato disagrees with Mother Monster’s behavior doesn’t mean she stopped enjoying her work.

Lovato pointed out that fans often emulate what their favorite musicians do when they’re on-stage. Since eating disorders and body image obsession are serious problems these days, Demi believes Gaga was a little irresponsible during her set at Stubb’s BBQ.
“People emulate what they see celebrities do or let happen. And that’s why I had to say something… to let the people who don’t understand the art in it, that bulimia isn’t cool, and it won’t get you on stage with your favorite artist,” she explained.
Demi Lovato said last year that some of her fans would probably be more than a little surprised by how much her addiction issues affected her life and career.
She explained:
“I’m battling with internal thoughts on how honest I should be. Yes, I’ve been very honest, but if people really knew how dark and deep my struggles got — not just with my eating disorder but with drugs and alcohol — they’d be really shocked. But I’ll most likely end up saying everything. Maybe it’ll help other people in the industry who are headed down the wrong path.”
