Jared Leto took a moment to thank a “future ex-wife” during his acceptance speech at the 2014 Independent Spirit Awards.
Considering the Dallas Buyers Club star has racked up a large number of awards for his role in the acclaimed drama, it’s not altogether surprising that he added yet another trophy to his collection this weekend. However, it was his joke during the event that seemed to catch everyone off-guard.
According to E! Online , Jared Leto took a moment to thank Justin Bieber, Kurt Cobain, Wayne Gretsky, River Phoenix and Baby Jesus during his acceptance speech on Saturday. He also took a moment to address rumors that he’s attached to 12 Years a Slave star Lupita Nyong’o .
“I want to thank all the women I’ve been with and all the women who think they’ve been with me. And also my future ex-wife — Lupita, I’m thinking about you!” Jared joked during his Independent Spirit Awards acceptance speech .
Nyong’o joked about the rumored relationship during a recent chat with Ellen DeGeneres. The actress seemed surprised that so many people are weirdly concerned about who she’s dating. However, that doesn’t mean she wasn’t willing to have a little fun with the subject.
“Ah, but I thought Miley Cyrus broke us up. That was the last thing I heard,” she told DeGeneres.
The actress added, “It’s crazy, ’cause when I read these rumors, they’re so detailed that even I start to question whether they’re true or not. I know I’ve believed them in the past and now I guess I can’t believe anything.”
Jared Leto kept the jokes flowing after he walked away with the best supporting male honor at the Independent Spirit Awards. During a brief chat with The Hollywood Reporter , the 30 Seconds to Mars singer gave his fans a little insight into where his acting career is presently headed.
Leto said he planned to pull a “reverse McConaissance” and start appearing in a string of romantic comedies. He also had a list of potential co-stars on-hand.
“Lupita would be great, because she made a serious film as well. I’m always down to work with Julia Roberts. Meryl Streep and I would make a great couple, I’d have to say. I don’t mean to make the world abuzz with any more rumors about Meryl and I,” he joked.
