Emma Coronel Aispuro, Beauty Queen Wife Of ‘El Chapo’ Guzman: Where Is She?

Emma Coronel Aispuro was mentioned as allegedly being the woman arrested alongside of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman on Saturday. Those early reports are now being questioned as officials have not made an official release of all the details in the drug lord’s bust.

In one of the biggest international drug arrests ever, Emma Coronel Aispuro finds herself in the middle of it. Only 18 when she first met Guzman, he was immediately attracted to her. She was participating in the Miss Coffee and Guava beauty contest where the fugitive was hiding out for the day. Aispuro is the niece of Ignacio “Nacho” Coronel, a one-time partner of Guzman who was killed in July 2010 in a shootout with the Mexican army.

Born in California, the now 24 year-old wife has the honor of being both a citizen of Mexico and the U.S. This dual citizenship has led some to speculate about the possibility of her involvement in the Sinaloa cartel. U.S. authorities have been watching the family of the man who escaped from prison in 2001. In 2012, Guzman’s daughter, Alejandrina Gisselle Guzman Salazar, was arrested as she attempted to move across the border near Arizona.

In 2011, Emma Coronel Aispuro entered the United States to give birth to twin girls, allegedly belonging to Guzman. Although the father’s name on the birth certificate remains blank, authorities feel certain that the children belong to the beauty queen and her fugitive husband. They were not able to apprehend Aispuro at the time because they do not have any evidence that she has been involved in illegal activity.

The arrest of “El Chapo” raises new questions in the involvement of his wife. If she was indeed the woman who was arrested alongside of Guzman, what has changed since 2012 that would lead the Mexican government to include her? As various attorney generals and states fight over how best to extradite and prosecute the drug lord, very little information is being released in the actual arrest. Because of his previous escape, there is a need to act quickly.

If the woman taken into custody was not his young wife, her whereabouts are still unknown. After more than 10 years of searching for the dangerous criminal, it is quite amazing that the Mexican marines were able to apprehend him in a simple beachside resort. Perhaps ‘El Chapo’ was enjoying a weekend away with his beauty queen wife Emma Coronel Aispuro.
