Katy Perry unleashed “Dark Horse” as the third single from her latest album Prism.
Those who have followed the singer’s career over the past few months probably aren’t too surprised that the track was recently selected as the new single. According to Idolator, quite a few people have dropped their cash on the track since the album’s release. The song also made appearances on several radio stations.
Since so many people seem to love the Katy Perry tune, the folks at Capitol Records decided to make it the third single from Prism to officially hit the airwaves. The tune was reportedly sent to radio stations across the nation on Tuesday (December 17).
Billboard points out that “Dark Horse” was extremely popular with radio listeners without solicitation from Katy Perry’s handlers. The track, which features rapper Juicy J, was a “surprise hit” on Top 40 despite the lack of a marketing push or an official music video.
During her conversation with MTV News earlier this year, Katy Perry opened up about what her legion of fans can expect from “Dark Horse.” According to the singer, there’s definitely some bewitching undertones to the tune’s lyrical content.
“It’s kind of a juxtaposition. It’s got me, a pop artist, with a little bit of an urban kind of hip-hop-flavored background soundtrack to it, and the lyrics are kind of witchy and dark, as if I was a witch warning this man not to fall in love with me, and if you do know I’m going to be your last,” the “Unconditionally” singer explained.
To give the track a little extra punch, The Inquisitr previously reported that Perry enlisted the help of Juicy J. The rapper explained that producer Dr. Luke ultimately masterminded the collaboration with the “Roar” singer.
“He sent me the track over, I did the verse and like a week later he called me again and he was like, ‘She wants to meet you she wants you to come to the studio,'” Juicy J explained.
He added, “When we finished the whole song we kept listening to it listening to it over and over again. And she was singing all the lyrics to my flow to my verse on the song and I was like, ‘Wow.’ Just to be there with Katy Perry a huge artist like that it’s great.”
