Axe Body Spray Closes School, Eight Students Hospitalized

Axe Body Spray is blamed for closing an entire school and sending eight students to the hospital. Authorities were called to Brooklyn’s Medgar Evers College Preparatory School to investigate a “hazardous” odor. The offensive scent was later determined to be the popular body spray.

When authorities arrived, they were informed that one or more students deployed the body spray inside a sixth grade classroom. The overpowering scent made numerous students ill.

As reported by Philly.com, eight students were transported to the hospital for treatment. Two more students were treated by their family physician. The extent of the students’ injuries is unknown, but school officials said the children were not seriously hurt.

In an official statement, the board of education said the student or students who deployed the body spray are facing disciplinary action.

This is not the first time a school experienced issues with Axe Body Spray. In March, a student at Freedom High School in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, had an allergic reaction to the odor. The reaction was so severe that the student was hospitalized.

As reported by Yahoo News, the incident prompted the Pennsylvania school to ban use of scented body sprays during school hours.

In May, an “overabundance” of Axe Body Spray set off fire alarms in a Middletown, Connecticut, high school locker room. As reported by Syracuse.com, the mist created a dense cloud, which activated the smoke alarm.

AXE products are clearly labeled to only “use as directed.” Additionally, company’s website has a section labeled “Responsible Use.” The website addresses the dangers of huffing or igniting the products. However, they do not discuss overuse.

Unfortunately, some men and boys regularly apply copious amounts of the body spray. It is not only unpleasant for others, it can cause adverse reactions.

In at least three incidents this year, schools were faced with problems cause by Axe Body Spray. Thankfully, nobody was seriously harmed.
