A 68-year-old Arizona man shot a much younger man that he allegedly caught in bed with his wife, 63, according to police.
The 911 call that was placed at about 1 am is embedded above.
The elderly man who lives in Tuscon’s Saddlebrooke adult community woke up in the middle of the night and found that his wife was not around, so he checked their guest house. There he allegedly found a 22-year-old man, identified in various media accounts as Stephen Trevor Chapman, in bed with his wife.
In the 911 call early Saturday morning, the man informs the dispatcher “I found a guy in bed with my wife. I told him to get out, and he attacked me, so I shot him.” Later in the call, the man claims that “some version” of this has happened before.
According to the local ABC News affiliate, the situation got contentious: “The man, who suffers from Parkinson’s disease, poked Chapman with his cane and told him to leave. The 22-year-old began yelling profanities and refused to leave the residence, the man told deputies. The older man told deputies that Chapman charged at him and because he feared for his life he fired a ‘warning shot’ towards him with a shotgun. The shot struck a nearby wall and Chapman received a minor injury to his hand.”
The somewhat convoluted 911 conversation suggests that the weapon was a handgun rather than a shotgun, however.
Pima County Sheriff Paul Babeu said “This was an unusual call for our deputies in an active senior community. Clearly, this young man should have heeded the warnings of the home owner to leave his residence and to stop sleeping with his wife,The young man is lucky that he only got poked with a cane and hit with a stray pellet from the shotgun.”
The younger man declined medical treatment and was booked into Pinal County Jail on suspicion of disorderly conduct. Additional charges are possible in the incident. The elderly man apparently was not charged with any offense.
On the 911 call, the elderly husband claimed that the younger man just got out of prison but the Arizona Corrections Department has no record of him.
