Bolshoi Violinist Dies After Falling Into Orchestra Pit

A violinist for Russia’s Bolshoi Theatre has died following an accident that saw him fall into the orchestra pit from the stage.

Viktor Sedov, who was a 65-year-old senior violinist with the highly respected musical contingent that had played in Moscow for four decades, died in hospital due to his injuries after he fell on Tuesday evening.

Katerina Novikova, who is the spokesman for the Bolshoi theatre, stated that he was a much-loved member of the theatre troupe who played in the second violins, and was loved because of his “sense of humor and extraordinary erudition.”

She went on to tell the AFP news agency, “Viktor Sedov, who had worked almost 40 years at the Bolshoi, fell into the orchestra pit on Tuesday and died on Wednesday in hospital as a result of his injuries.”

Further details regarding Mr Sedov’s death haven’t been released, however his tragic demise is yet another horrible incident involving the Bolshoi this year.

In January, Sergei Filin, an artistic director at the Bolshoi, almost lost his eyesight when he had acid thrown into his face outside of his home in the Russian capital of Moscow.

The 42-year-old suffered third-degree burns to both his neck and face in the attack, however it has since been alleged that Mr Filin orchestrated that entire ordeal himself.

Last week, Bolshoi’s theater director was changed, with Vladmimir Urin coming in to replace Anatoly Iksanov, who was fired. Urin has previously been the head of the Moscow Stanislavksy Musical Theatre, a highly regarded theatre company from Russia.

Iksanov, who was 61-years-old, was sacked, according to Vladimir Medinsky, the Russian Culture Minister, because of a “difficult situation at the theatre,” despite the fact that he had held the position for almost 13 years.

Do you believe that the Bolshoi theatre is currently cursed?
