DreamWorks To Open Theme Parks In Russia
DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc. is set to open indoor theme parks in Russia.
Developer Regions Group has signed an agreement with the studio to build a number of parks around Russia. Bloomberg reports the attractions are slated to open in 2015.
Regions Group, which develops and manages retail properties, has been charged with building and operating the theme parks. The attractions will be built in and around St. Petersburg, Moscow, and Yekaterinburg.
The parks will include hotels, multi-purpose theaters, and retail space. They will also be centered around characters from DreamWorks Animation’s motion pictures. The studio is responsible for creating such successful franchises as Shrek and Madagascar.
According to Reuters, DreamWorks will be the first American movie studio to open theme parks in Russia. Regions Group will act as the sole investor in the development of these attractions. DreamsWork added that they expect the parks to be the largest year-round indoor entertainment attractions in Europe.
Chief Executive Jeffrey Katzenberg said in a statement:
“Russia is one of the most important markets in the world for us. All of us at DWA are extremely excited to work with Regions CG to be the first Hollywood studio to create not just one, but three theme parks in Russia.”
DreamWorks is also working on projects outside of Russia. Market Watch explains that the studio is currently collaborating with Mall of America owner Triple Five Group to build theme parks in the United States. One such attraction has been proposed for a development project called American Dream Meadowlands in New Jersey.
The studio is also attached to a multi-billion dollar project that’s currently being developed in Shanghai.
In addition to Russian theme parks, DreamWorks Animation is building partnerships in other markets. The company recently inked a deal with Netflix to develop a TV series centered around the upcoming Ryan Reynolds movie Turbo.
