Director Kathryn Bigelow Is ‘Overrated’ Because She’s Hot, Says Bret Easton Ellis

Kathryn Bigelow has racked up numerous accolades during her film career (she has two Oscars and was the first woman to win an Academy Award for best directing) and she may add on to that list with her latest film Zero Dark Thirty. Bigelow is also very attractive. According to Bret Easton Ellis, Bigelow is an “overrated” director who is only popular because she’s also a “very hot woman.”

According to Ellis, the writer of the soon-to-be panned Lindsay Lohan movie The Canyons, said that Bigelow would be considered a “mildly interesting” director if she was a man.

Ellis wrote on Twitter:

“Kathryn Bigelow would be considered a mildly interesting filmmaker if she was a man but since she’s a very hot woman she’s really overrated.

Bigelow won her two Oscars, one for directing and one for best picture, in 2009 for her movie The Hurt Locker. Her latest movie Zero Dark Thirty hasn’t hit theaters yet but it has already gained critical praise by winning best film honors from the New York Film Critics Circle and the National Board of Review.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Zero Dark Thirty is also considered to be an Oscar contender for best picture, best screenplay, best actress and, of course, for best director.

Ellis doesn’t share the same film accolades as Kathryn Bigelow but he is an accomplished author. His novel American Psycho was turned into movie starring Christian Bale and he recently penned The Canyons starring Lindsay Lohan and porn star James Deen.

What do you think about Bret Easton Ellis’ comment? Is Kathryn Bigelow an “overrated” director? Is Ellis jealous of Bigelow’s success?

I don't see how this is that controversial – people used to say similar things about Brad Pitt and Leo DiCaprio when they were starting out. Why is it only sexist when it's directed at a woman?

Who knows. I think she won an 'anti-Avatar' Oscar when they went to 10 candidates for Best Picture, and the actors wanted to fight against commercial success. All of these unemployed actors, and they still hate the commercial success that gives actors jobs. It says something about the United States, doesn't it.

He left out "because she was married to Jim Cameron". Her career was nowhere before she locked onto his coattails in 1989.

No new news here. I thought the same thing when she won for Hurt Locker. I was unimpressed with her directing in comparison and I felt something was rigged then.

I would take Strange Days, Blue Steel, and Point Break (best chase on foot ever filmed) over Ellis' self-indulgent crap any day. I actually think Bigelow is underrated as a director.

the trailers for her new film don't pique my interest at all, but given how much I loved "The Hurt Locker," I should know better than to underestimate her.

I agree – she's overrated. And I couldn't watch 10 minutes of Hurt Locker, that movie stunk.

Last time I checked beauty was in the eye of the beholder. I'm not attracted to her but The Hurt Locker was awesome. You want to talk about overrated, Michael Bay (aka Mr. 50 Million CGI Explosions Per Movie).

I don't believe that. The Hurt Locker is one of my new fav films.

No Offense, but Kathryn Bigelow is not a "very hot woman". I think she's just an average looking woman She isn't overrated. She's actually a really good director, I just think some of her films like Blue Steel, The Hurt Locker, and The Weight of Water were not all that good. The Hurt Locker should have never one the academy award for best picture in my personal opinion, good film just not oscar worthy. But respect to Bigelow for making it in an industry that has often been dominated by males.

He couldn't be more correct. And, kinda funny how he's only given credit in this article as being the writer of The Canyons, and not a highly successful author and chronicler of the vapid and overindulgent since the 1980's…

What kind of professional jealousy crap is this? By similar proxy, I could say Ellis is overrated because he's done a shitload of drugs and essentially writes the same story over and over again until he's exhausted his bag of tricks.

She's not even hot, she looks old and leathery. So his theory is false.
