Ryan Seacrest’s future is brighter than ever. After being announced as Kelly Ripa’s new co-host on Live with Kelly and Ryan, Seacrest might be on the verge of hosting ABC’s reboot of American Idol. Is he leaving Ripa and the Kardashians behind for his new job?
An inside source told Radar Online that Kris Jenner was worried that Seacrest might leave her family behind when he took to co-hosting gig in New York. But when the Keeping Up With the Kardashians star confronted her longtime friend, he assured her that he isn’t going anywhere.
“After Kris negotiated a higher salary for Ryan to stay working on KUWTK, he assured her that he was going to stay and will continue to be actively involved in the production of her show,” the insider revealed. “Obviously, he is not giving up his new gig at Live either!”
Seacrest is a busy man these days. Apart from co-hosting Live, Seacrest operates his own radio show and helps produce two reality TV shows, including KUWTK and Shahs of Sunset. The biggest hurdle in Seacrest’s busy schedule is the fact that most of his projects are based out of Los Angeles while Live is filmed in New York every weekday. Fortunately, it sounds like Seacrest has it all figured out.
“He will now be flying back and forth from NYC to California and Kris is fine with it,” the insider noted. “In fact, she is thinking of shooting more of KUWTK episodes in NYC, so it worked out for the both of them.”
Of course, Seacrest’s involvement in American Idol might change all of that. While ABC hasn’t said anything about Seacrest hosting, Perez Hilton reports that he is currently in negotiations to take the job. After all, it really wouldn’t be American Idol without Seacrest at the helm.
Apart from Seacrest, Katy Perry is expected to be a judge on the reboot along with a few American Idol alums. While nothing is official, the network is trying to nab Carrie Underwood, Chris Daughtry, and Adam Lambert. Coldplay’s Christ Martin was rumored to be another consideration, though his rep has since come forward and debunked the rumors.
According to Variety, Seacrest opened up about hosting American Idol during a recent episode of Live with Kelly and Ryan. At the time, Seacrest didn’t give away too many details about his plans but definitely seemed open to the idea.
“No, I don’t know about that part yet,” Seacrest shared when asked about the reboot. “We haven’t gotten that far. This was news to me, actually last week. I had said at the end of the series, ‘Goodbye for now,’ hoping somewhere it would come back.”
Kelly Ripa naturally pressed Seacrest for more information, and he admitted that his busy schedule might prevent him from taking on the hosting duties.
“I don’t know if I can host it. Do you know the preparation I have to do for this show every night?” he responded.
Seacrest hosted the hit show throughout all of its 15 seasons on Fox. While returning to American Idol makes sense for Seacrest, he might not have time to film another series. Idol was originally filmed in Los Angeles and moving it to New York would definitely be more expensive, though it might accommodate Seacrest’s schedule better.
Whatever happens, it is clear that ABC plans on bringing back American Idol next year. The network is working alongside Core Media Group and FremantleMedia to make it happen. The series is expected to premiere sometime in March of 2018.
New episodes of Live with Kelly and Ryan air weekdays on ABC.
