Mitt Romney: Secretary Of State Possible For Former Massachusetts Governor

MSNBC is reporting that sources with “direct knowledge” of the situation are stating that 2012 Republican presidential nominee and former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney is being considered for Secretary of State by President-elect Donald Trump.

A meeting is planned, thought to be for either New York City or New Jersey, where Trump and the former governor will discuss the prospect of Secretary of State Mitt Romney on Sunday.

MSNBC described Romney as being a “vocal member” of the “Never Trump” movement. The network quoted the former governor describing the president-elect as being “dishonest” and “very, very not smart” in a speech given in March.

The MSNBC hosts noted that Donald Trump was critical of Romney through the course of his presidential campaign.

“Dishonesty is Trump’s hallmark,” is a quote from the March Romney speech, transcribed by Politico.“Think of Donald Trump’s personal qualities, the bullying, the greed, the showing off, the misogyny, the absurd third grade theatrics,” the speech continued.

The notion that the president-elect might be hoping to assemble a “team of rivals” has been proposed.

“There is one thing that Donald Trump has proven, via his actions, which is, loyalty matters most,” Hallie Jackson said with regard to current thinking surrounding the next White House administration.

“If Donald Trump’s plans were ever implemented, the country would sink into a prolonged recession,” Mitt Romney stated in March.

Whether or not the president-elect will actually select a person who had shown such seeming disloyalty for such a high-level position in his cabinet remains to be seen.

Also said to be under consideration for the Secretary of State position is former South Carolina Governor Nikki Hailey, described as being a “mortal enemy” of President-elect Trump.

Mark Preston, CNN Politics executive editor, described the possibility of Romney serving on a Trump cabinet as “amazing,” given that the two Republicans have not been seen as “close allies.”

Preston went on to say that even if Mitt Romney does not end up serving as Secretary of State, that “hope” remains that he may stay on as an “informal outside adviser” to the president-elect.

Mark Preston observed that members of the Republican Party are beginning to “come home.”

Abby Phillip, with the Washington Post, stated that few people shared such an “antagonistic relationship” as the 2012 Republican nominee and Donald Trump.

CNN Washington correspondent Jeff Zeleny described the mood changing in Washington with the election from one of campaigning to governing. Zeleny stated that people were “coming together” under a Trump presidency.

Jeff Zeleny said that it would be “fascinating” to see if Mitt Romney would actually accept a position in a Donald Trump White House, he went on to say that Romney serving as an “outside adviser” would also be “interesting.”

The CNN correspondent explained that Nikki Hailey and Mitt Romney have been lobbing political attacks at the president-elect “from afar.”

“Now, when they sit down and meet it’s a whole different situation,” Jeff Zeleny said.

“He failed horribly,” Donald Trump said with regard to Mitt Romney’s 2012 presidential run at a rally in Portland, Maine in March, following the former Massachusetts governor’s fiery speech.

The president-elect stated that the 2012 race was one that “should have been won” by the Republicans. He went to stated that Mitt Romney was “begging” for Trump’s endorsement in 2012.

“I could have said, ‘Mitt, drop to your knees.’ He would have dropped to his knees,” Donald Trump explained to hoots of approval from those gathered in Maine.

Trump went on to say that the former Republican presidential nominee had let the Republican Party down, describing Romney as not working hard enough, and allowing distractions, such as a Californian nine-car garage, to interfere with his 2012 presidential campaign.
