169 US Reps Call Donald Trump To Reverse Stephen Bannon Appointment [Opinion]

A huge number of members of the House of Representatives joined thousands of citizens in a letter urging Donald Trump to revoke the White House appointment of Stephen Bannon.

It seems Donald Trump just never stops trying to amaze and disappoint the people of America. Just last Sunday, president-elect Donald Trump released a preliminary list of people he is putting on the Senior White House Leadership Team. Right off the bat, the press release reads that Trump is appointing Trump for President CEO Stephen K. Bannon to serve as Chief Strategist and Senior Counselor to the President.

Apparently, the blood of the covenant between these brothers is too thick to dilute. Trump made the following statement in his press release.

“I am thrilled to have my very successful team continue with me in leading our country. Steve and Reince are highly qualified leaders who worked well together on our campaign and led us to a historic victory. Now I will have them both with me in the White House as we work to make America great again.”

Of course, outrage over the appointment started immediately, as the Inquisitr reports. Stephen Bannon is notoriously known as the former head of Breitbart News, a conservative website that Newsweek defines as a destination for the euphemistically named “alt-right,” whose members, when called what they are, include conspiracy theorists, neo-Nazis, white supremacists, and anti-Semites.

Critics believe that Stephen Bannon is extremely bad news for the White House as he will bring anti-Semitic, nationalist, and racist views to the West Wing. In fact, already a number of personalities and organizations are calling on Donald Trump to rescind the Bannon appointment.

Now, a significant portion of the House of Representatives is joining the call to urge Donald Trump to rescind the appointment. Boston Globe reports that 169 representatives have supported a letter addressed to President-Elect Donald Trump. Headed by Representative David Cicilline, the letter argues that Bannon’s appointment “sends a disturbing message about what kind of president Donald Trump wants to be.”

An excerpt from the letter by the US Representatives makes their disdain for Bannon clear.

“Millions of Americans have expressed fear and concern about how they will be treated by the Trump Administration and your appointment of Mr. Bannon only exacerbates and validates their concerns.”

“As the Executive Chairman of Breitbart News, Mr. Bannon repeatedly and aggressively pushed stories that promote anti-Semitism, xenophobia, and racism. During an interview last summer, Mr. Bannon bragged that Breitbart was ‘the platform for the alt-right,’ a movement that upholds White Nationalism while strongly rejecting diversity in any form. Under Mr. Bannon’s leadership, Breitbart has referred to a leading Republican who opposed your election as a ‘Renegade Jew,’ suggested ‘Young Muslims in the West are a ticking time bomb,’ declared that the ‘Confederate flag proclaims a glorious heritage,’ and praised the alt-right as a ‘smarter” version of’ old-school racist skinheads.”

“We strongly believe that Mr. Bannon’s appointment will not allow the country to heal and come together as one. As one of your top advisors, the White House chief strategist will help set the tone for your administration. The person in this role must be prepared to serve the interests of all Americans, not those of a select few.”

Nearly every Democrat member of the House of Representatives has supported and signed the said letter addressed to Donald Trump. Out of the 188 House Democrats, 169 have signed the letter. It is also important to note that not a single Republican member of the House did.

Will Donald Trump heed the motion to revise his appointment of Stephen Bannon? Highly unlikely. But we’ll see.
