While fans of Outlander are already getting excited about the show’s second season, there are still a number of mysteries that remain. Perhaps the biggest secret yet to be answered involves the casting of Brianna Randall. Producers have kept a tight lid on information concerning the role of Claire’s (Caitriona Balfe) daughter, however, are they getting ready to break their silence?
According to Movie News Guide, Starz is just about ready to make the casting announcement. With the premiere of the second season only months from becoming a reality, fans can expect to know who will play Brianna at some point in the next few weeks.
As evidence of the coming announcement, writer and producer Matthew B. Roberts recently posted a message on Twitter that hinted an actress has been found for the role.
“Last read-thru of @Outlander_Starz #outlander S2 Some familiar faces, some new ones. Some laughter, some tears. Mostly tears #Bittersweet,” he wrote.
Although Roberts kept the details vague, his mention of new faces is one indication that Brianna has now been cast. Even more, the fact that the cast has already reached the final reading of the script is another hint that producers have filled the role. After all, it would be difficult to go through the entire script without an important character like Brianna being cast.
That being said, it is still unclear which actress may have selected for the part. Although names like Maeve Foley have been thrown around in recent months, producers are trying their best to keep the casting a secret until they make their official announcement. Fortunately, fans now only have a few weeks to wait until that highly anticipated announcement is finally made.
While many fans are already familiar with Brianna’s role in the novels by Diana Gabaldon, Cinema Blend is reporting that the television series is making some changes to her storyline. This includes Brianna playing a larger role in the upcoming season than she did in the second book in Gabaldon’s series, which the upcoming season is based on.
For the most part, the series is expected to shift some things around in its adaptation of the books. This will impact Brianna the most, as some of her story elements that were not included until book four will be featured in the second season. This means fans can expect Brianna to follow Claire as she travels back in time and meet her real father.
In regards to time traveling, Ecumenical News is reporting that Claire will reunite with her husband, Frank Randall (Tobias Menzies), at some point in Season 2. Their reunion carries a lot of significance for Claire, especially considering how closely he resembles Black Jack Randall, who was also played by Menzies.
“There is that reverse thing where every time she looks at Frank, she can’t help but see Black Jack [Randall],” Balfe explained to TV Line.
Considering how Black Jack was the one responsible for Jamie’s (Sam Heughan) imprisonment and sexual abuse, it will certainly be challenging for Claire when the two finally meet again. At the same time, Claire will also be dealing with her pregnancy while helping Jamie cope with his past trauma.
Whether or not Claire is able to move past her visions of Black Jack when she meets Frank is yet to be seen. The only certainty is that Brianna, and whoever ends up playing her, will be catching a ride back in time in order to meet her father for the first time.
The second season of Outlander is set to premiere in the spring of 2016.
