Blue Marlin: Hawaii Home To Giant Blue Marlin Caught In Waters Near Kona

A Blue Marlin caught in Hawaii waters near Kona weighed in at 1,368-pounds. The giant fish was reeled in on July 28, according to images posted on Waiopai Sport Fishing Charters’ Facebook page.

The big fish is only eight pounds short of a record set in 1982, Bleacher reports, citing the International Game Fish Association (h/t PeteThomasOutdoors.com).

As seen in the photo above, the huge Blue Marlin caught in Hawaii was placed onto the back of a truck — giving its size some perspective.

Guy Kitaoka is the angler who reeled in the large marlin after an hour-long battle on a 21-foot skiff, according to the report. The sea creature is 12.5-feet-long.

SportsGrid.com adds that the Blue Marlin is a female and her age range is somewhere between 18-to-26-years-old, which is considered fairly old for the species. Blue Marlin males apparently live far shorter lives and rarely go over 300-pounds.

This catch is ranked as the eighth largest ever recorded. The largest Blue Marlin ever caught was called “Choy’s Monster” and weighed 1,805-pounds. Some commercial fisherman have said that they’ve netted Blues that can weigh over 2,000-pounds.

Kitaoka spoke to KITV 4 about his thrilling Blue Marlin catch in Hawaii.

“Amazement… As to how big it was! Was thinking 300 over 800 pounds!”

Kitoaka’s estimate was just slightly off on that. He was shocked when he learned it the marlin weighed in at 1,368-pounds. He definitely had an audience during the whole process.

“Everyone was so excited for the weigh-in. Probably 50 to 60 people down there for the weigh-in. It was a lifetime experience!”

The experienced angler of 50 years was joined by his longtime friend, Darrell Omori, on the fishing adventure. He said reeling in something like this was the last thing on their minds. They were using a 4-pound aku as bait when they hooked this marlin off the waters of Hawaii.

“For all fishermen, catching a grander is something you wish for. When I finally got mine, man I was stoked!”

The Inquisitr has written numerous articles on large fish being caught all over the world — everything from enormous catfish to stingrays. In fact, TV nature conservationist Jeff Corwin, and his assistants, reeled in a gigantic 800-pound stingray in Thailand that was 14-feet-long. It was the largest freshwater fish ever caught with a line and rod.

The Blue Marlin that was caught in Hawaii this week is rivaling many large fish reported in the latest news.
