Though it seems like Amy Poehler can’t be mentioned without Tina Fey and Tina Fey can’t be mentioned without Amy Poehler, it’s been seven years since Poehler and Fey teamed up to star in the hit comedy Baby Mama. Sure, fans got their fix of the best friends when Fey and Poehler hosted the Golden Globes together for the past three years, filmed short cameos in Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, and even last night as Poehler and Fey welcomed Jimmy Fallon back to The Tonight Show following his finger avulsion injury.
Poehler and Fey met during their tenure at Second City, a comedy improv troupe, and were reunited as cast mates on Saturday Night Live. The pair’s chemistry was so strong that Fey and Poehler ended up being the first all-woman anchor team to man (or woman in this case) the anchor desk of SNL‘s “Weekend Update.” As Fey’s star began to rise with the writing and starring in Mean Girls, of which Poehler played a bit part as Regina George’s “cool mom,” she eventually moved from SNL to the hit television series 30 Rock.
But even starring, producing, and writing a new show couldn’t keep Tina Fey away from the ying to her yang, Amy Poehler. As fans noted, because of Fey’s resemblance to Sarah Palin, Tina was coaxed back onto the SNL set to perform sketch comedies as the Sarah Palin to Amy Poehler’s Hilary Clinton.
Amy Poehler left SNL for the critically acclaimed Parks and Recreation and ever since the two went their own separate ways, fans have been chomping at the bit for any sort of reunion with the two.
Sisters seems to have switched up the typical roles of Fey and Poehler, this time with Poehler playing the straight laced one to Fey’s wild child. The duo plays sisters who discover their parents have put their childhood home up for sale and vow to throw one more epic high school style party. In less than 24 hours, the Fey/Poehler trailer has had over 1 million hits.
Filming on Sisters finished in the summer of 2014, but its planned release date isn’t until December 18. As Tina Fey, jokingly told David Letterman last Fall, “For some reason it comes out the same week as Star Wars. Sorry George Lucas.” While Star Wars: The Force Awakens may be the most highly anticipated film of the year for sci-fi fans, Sisters appears to be the holy grail for Fey and Poehler fanatics.
