‘Doctor Who’ Season 9 Spoilers: Premiere Details, The Doctor ‘Running From Something,’ And The Comic-Con Schedule

Doctor Who fans may still have to wait a bit longer for Season 9, but with Comic-Con next week and the series returning with a panel – and a first-time attendee – there is plenty to be excited about right now, especially since Peter Capaldi has teased what’s to come. It may not be much, but it’s more than had been revealed before.

In addition to the returns of Osgood and the Zygons, as the Inquisitr previously reported, in the ninth season of Doctor Who, Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams will be appearing, and Capaldi told Entertainment Weekly that “her character… shifts in cosmic ways.”

Previously, lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffat had said that her character “is going to challenge the Doctor in very unexpected ways,” and with the Doctor maybe “out of his depth… Maisie is going to give him exactly the right sort of hell.”

Capaldi also revealed that the Moffat-written two-part premiere, “The Magician’s Apprentice” and “The Witch’s Familiar,” “places the Doctor in a conflict that is central to his being” and has “some subtle tributes to the ’60s and truly wonderful guest performances.”

EW also has a photo from that premiere, and though it doesn’t show much – you can only see the Doctor in front of the TARDIS and you can tell it isn’t a good situation – Capaldi teased that his character is “about to make a mistake that has cataclysmic repercussions.”

Does that “mistake” have anything to do with the fact that the actor also teased that his character is “running from something, that even he does not yet understand”?

That sounds like one way to kick off a new season in style! Also coming up this season, expect old, new, and scary monsters and villains, and yes, Michelle Gomez will be back as Missy.

In other news, after skipping the festivities last year, Doctor Who will have a panel at San Diego Comic-Con this week, on Thursday, July 9 at 2:15 p.m. (PT) in Hal H, with panelists Peter Capaldi, Jenna Coleman, Michele Gomez, and Steven Moffat. The moderator is Chris Hardwick.

Capaldi has released a statement about his Comic-Con debut, and that panel is going to begin the countdown to the upcoming ninth season, which begins with the two-part premiere.

“Tales of San Diego Comic Con are told in awe on every set around the known fantasy/sci-fi production world. It’s become a fabled kingdom. One I am thrilled to find myself heading for. And to appear in the legendary Hall H is a further twist to the cosplay and comic madness I may never recover from.”

If you’re in San Diego and can’t make it to the panel (or just can’t make it into Hall H), there’s also a Fan Meetup at the House of Blues on Saturday, July 11, 2:30-4:30 p.m., and you don’t need a Comic-Con badge to attend. There will be a Whovian dance party, a Weeping Angel photo booth, a temporary DW tattoo station, a live game show, and surprise guests.

Doctor Who Season 9 will air on BBC America this fall.
