‘Constantine’ Actor Matt Ryan Now Does Broadway With Keira Knightley, Reports Indicate

Constantine, the Matt Ryan-led NBC show, had its final nail pounded into the coffin just a few days ago, but the reverberation can still be felt throughout social media. Though showrunner Daniel Cerone indicated that the contracts have expired and Constantine was through, despite the Inquisitrreport that it might end up on the CW, many fans hold onto hope. Stranger things have happened, though, and TV shows like Heroes managed to make a comeback almost a decade later on the same network.

However, Constantine actor Matt Ryan is trading in his dark arts for a love triangle with new love interest Keira Knightley, Wales Online reports. After the role of John Constantine, a Broadway play with Knightley might seem like an odd choice for Matt Ryan, but he is actually more familiar with theater than you might think. A quick glance at his résumé lists him as a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company for 11 years.

He will be playing in the play Therese Raquin, which is based on the 1867 French novel of the same name. It has been made into a film in 1928, 1958, and 2012. The Constantine anti-hero, Matt Ryan, will play the titular character’s, Keira Knightley’s, childhood friend. The Hollywood Reporter explained the love triangle that Matt Ryan and Keira Knightley are entangled in best.

“[Gabriel] Ebert will play the weak and selfish Camille, married to Therese, played by previously announced lead Knightley. Ryan is cast as Therese’s childhood friend Laurent, who re-enters her life, accompanied by passionate feelings that spin out of control.”

Constantine fans will probably not find it hard to believe that the former NBC John Constantine Matt Ryan would be involved in such a matter, but he will not have Manny the angel or his assortment of magical gadgets to sort this torrid romance out. Also, it takes place over 100 years ago. The frilly look of that time would not suit John Constantine, but Matt Ryan was recently on stage in a 2009 production of Hamlet. This will be his first trip to Broadway, though.

Any Matt Ryan, Keira Knightley, and maybe even Constantine, fan will be able to see a preview of the Broadway play October 1, 2015. However, the Broadway debut will start October 29, Variety reports.

So, for those looking for a different side of Constantine‘s Matt Ryan, in a Broadway relationship with Keira Knightley, you can hop on over to New York City in the fall — sadly, for John Constantine Fans, a time that would have been a premiere for the second season.

Will you be checking out Therese Raquin? Will the former NBC show ever find a new home?
