Carjacker Picks The Wrong Man To Victimize: Armed Victim Holds Carjacker At Gunpoint Until Police Arrive

An Atlanta carjacker learned the hard way that not everybody is going to willingly let a thief steal their property after being held at gunpoint by his armed, would-be victim until police arrived, WSBTV (Atlanta) is reporting.

Police say car owner Hashim Fannin had just pulled into the parking lot at an Atlanta-area Dollar General. When he put the car in Park, the doors automatically unlocked, and a man Hashim didn’t know slid into the passenger seat and pulled out a gun.

“He told me, ‘You know what this is.’ I asked him to get out of the car, probably not in those exact words. I told him ‘No, there’s no leaving. Leaving was before you hopped into my car. At this point there is no leaving.'”

Fannin, who was armed, ordered the suspect — later identified as 61-year-old James B. Horn — to the ground and held him at gunpoint until police arrived.

“You were not trying to rob me. Do you just get into random people’s cars… you thought I was your friend … you thought I was your friend… so you woke up stupid this morning?”

A passerby recorded the incident on cell phone video, which has been made available via WSBTV.

Police arrived a short time later and thanked the would-be carjacking victim for keeping the criminal subdued until they arrived, according to the Daily Mail. as police arrived on the scene, Fannin — who was holding his gun — wisely put it down on the ground and waved cops over. Fannin says officers shook his hand.

“Honestly, I look at it like this. That is one less guy I got to worry about bothering my mom when she’s out grocery shopping.”

“Sliding,” a form of carjacking in which the assailant “slides” into an either occupied or unocuppied car and steals it, has become a problem in Atlanta of late. Twice in the last two weeks, Atlanta carjackers have stolen vehicles with children still in them. East Point police spokesperson Cliff Chandler warns motorists to keep their keys with them at all times.

“We are requesting the public if you do have to pump gas for a short amount of time, take your keys — that will dissuade someone from trying to get into your car.”

That advice wouldn’t have helped Nashim Fannin, of course.

Fannin’s alleged carjacker has been taken to jail, charged with armed robbery and illegally entering an automobile.
