‘Vanity Fair’s’ ‘Star Wars’ Issue: Han Solo And Chewbacca Become Cover Models

(Caution: Speculation on Star Wars: The Force Awakens, that may or may not be actual spoilers below.)

Star Wars characters Han Solo and Chewbacca — two of the most iconic names in the history of cinema, recognizable by every generation currently living, due to the massive continuing popularity of the franchise take it up a notch on the famous scale by being photographed by legendary photographer, Annie Leibovitz, for the June cover of Vanity Fair.

They share the cover with a few of the fresh faced heroes of The Force Awakens that audiences aren’t familiar with yet — namely, Finn (John Boyega), Rey (Daisy Ridley) and a droid, who goes by the name BB-8. Oddly, Poe (Oscar Isaac) doesn’t appear — but hopefully he’s got a few shots in the article, along with Leia (Carrie Fisher) and Luke (Mark Hamill).

There’s been very little revealed about these new characters but the speculation on Finn is that he’s the Luke Skywalker of Star Wars: The Force Awakens — likely meaning he’s someone who’s unfamiliar with the Jedi and their ways who ends up embracing the religion in order to defeat a rising darkness.

Zap2it attended The Force Awakens panel at the Star Wars Celebration and was able to get a blurb from each of the actors on their respective characters. John Boyega said that Finn is in “incredible danger” and a choice he makes because of that “launches him into the Star Wars universe in a very unique way.”

Rey is a female scavenger on a desert planet called Jakku, who is, according to Ridley, “completely self-sufficient… until she meets another character and her adventure begins. And if the trailer and the recently released pictures are anything to go by, the character she meets, and likely helps, is Finn.

It didn’t take long for the new little round droid from the first trailer to become everyone’s favorite. And because J.J. Abrams wanted to use an old school approach to the look of The Force Awakens, BB-8 is real and he has already made an appearance at a Star Wars celebration in Anaheim. Take a look.

Vanity Fair will also be posting more photographs and exclusive video on the much-anticipated new chapter of Star Wars on May 4 — no doubt to take advantage of the annual, but unofficial, Star Wars day known as “May the Fourth Be With You.”

The Star Wars issue of Vanity Fair hits newsstands on May 12.
