Shailene Woodley Loves To Eat Bugs: A Look At Her Other Wacky Health Advice


Shailene Woodley recently shared some news that will shock absolutely no one — she eats something weird to stay healthy. The foraging fairy’s new favorite snack might gross you out a bit, but it is pretty nutritious.

Nylon magazine shared a behind-the-scenes video from the Insurgent star’s recent photo shoot, and she revealed that she loves to eat bugs. Shailene Woodley has tried ants and June bugs, and she says that both were “great.” So if Shailene ever wants a quick snack on a warm spring night, all she has to do is hang around a porch light.

“I think the future of food is in insects, so we’ll see what happens,” Shailene predicted.

Most people probably wouldn’t trade their burgers for bugs, but Slate points out that insects are an excellent source of protein. Many bugs also contain other nutrients like B12 and calcium. Insects can be ground up into a nutritious protein powder that can be added to health shakes and green juices.

Woodley the wood nymph doesn’t just get her protein from creepy crawlies — she also enjoys munching on pigs’ feet. During her Nylon interview, Woodley raved about how “gelatinous” the porkers’ appendages are. So while many health-conscious and eco-conscious types are vegan or vegetarian, Shailene Woodley definitely is not. As the Inquisitr recently reported, the actress is also a fan of bone broth, another odd animal product that’s gaining popularity among health hipsters.

Because Shailene Woodley has divulged another strange health secret, it’s time for an obligatory rundown of the Divergent star’s wackiest healthy living tips.

According to Shailene’s Spectacular Now co-star Miles Teller, one of her health habits has a stinky side effect.

“Before our first kissing scene, Shailene took these Chinese dirt supplements and shoved them in her mouth,” Teller told Variety. “It’s like a dirt pouch, and it smells like crap.”

Perhaps Woodley was munching on some of the clay that she just can’t quit raving about. It doesn’t just smell like poo — it has an interesting effect on excrement. During an interview with Into the Gloss, Shailene talked about eating clay to cleanse her body.

“I’ve discovered that clay is great for you because your body doesn’t absorb it, and it apparently provides a negative charge, so it bonds to negative isotopes. And, this is crazy: it also helps clean heavy metals out of your body. My friend starting eating it and the next day she called me and said, ‘Dude, my s**t smells like metal.'”

According to Shailene Woodley, that metallic smell is a normal side effect of eating clay. During the same interview, she raved about the benefits of going bottomless and letting lady parts get a little UV ray exposure.

“Another thing I like to do is give my vagina a little vitamin D… If you’re feeling depleted, go in the sun for an hour and see how much energy you get. Or, if you live in a place that has heavy winters, when the sun finally comes out, spread your legs and get some sunshine.”

Shailene also thinks that dreaming is important, so she does something right before she goes to sleep to ensure that hers are vivid and crazy. During an interview with Emma Stone for Interview magazine, Shailene revealed that ingests an herb that sounds like something that belongs in a witches brew: mugwort.

“It’s actually what we’d call a weed. You can find it all over America. You can dry it and make it into a tea or you can burn it like sage. It’s what the Native Americans used to do to bring on helpful dreams to encourage visions for the coming days.”

The herb must work, because Shailene Woodley shared her craziest recurring dream with Nylon, and it sounds pretty cool — she commandeers a pirate ship in a world inspired by The Princess Bride.
