Clumsy Bear Falls Through Skylight In Family’s Home Then Eats Cupcakes At Baby’s Birthday Party

Animals never cease to do silly things. A clumsy bear falls though a skylight in a family’s home then proceeds to eat cupcakes just before a baby’s first birthday party celebration. Imagine how the homeowners felt in Juneau, Alaska when they saw a young bear as one of their uninvited guests!

USA Today reports that a 180-pound young bear fell through a skylight into Glenn Merrill and Alicia Bishop’s living room on Saturday. The bear must have been hungry because he went straight to the cupcakes.

Juneau Empire first reported on the animal party crasher. Glenn Merrill tells the source:

“I was literally in the room, and I heard this cracking. The next thing you know, there’s this bear that, I mean literally, fell right from (the skylight). It was like one meter away from me.”

Both had a look of surprise on their face after the bear crashed through the skylight. Merrill says:

“I don’t know who was more stunned. I think, both.”

Next thing you, know the bear wasted no time heading for the lemon blueberry and peanut butter cupcakes sitting on the living room table. Alicia Bishop, who observed the whole scene unfold behind closed glass doors in the kitchen, said:

“The bear walks over and puts its paws up on the table and starts licking his birthday cupcakes, and I’m just like, ‘you’ve got to be kidding me.'”

Bishop opened a door from the other side of the room which led to the backyard. Merrill and Bishop managed to shoo the bear out. He reportedly lumbered out the door, but they had to spray mace at him because he peered through their windows wanting back in! After he was maced, the bear headed went back into the woods. The homeowners then dialed 911.

According to Juneau Empire, the grandmother took the baby upstairs after the bear fell through the skylight and Merrill watched the bear recover from the fall. Merrill believes that the bear was used to humans since he was so calm and didn’t act aggressively.

The report goes on to say that a half-hour later the same suspected bear ambled into another home and was shot dead by the Juneau Police Department. Alaska Department of Fish and Game Management Coordinator Ryan Scott thinks it was the same bear. Both houses were in close proximity of each other. The bear was a young male at 180 pounds, which is what Merrill described.

“I believe it was the same bear,” Scott said.

Residents in the area live where a lot of bears live. As Merrill points out, it’s sad that bears get habituated so fast because it doesn’t usually end well for them.

The bear that went crashing through a skylight didn’t have a happy ending. Unfortunately, this could have been increasingly dangerous for humans as the bear grew older.
