Impeach President Obama: South Dakota’s Republican Party Calls For Impeachment

An effort to impeach President Barack Obama is coming out from the South Dakota Republican Party, which passed a resolution saying that Obama has “violated his oath of office in numerous ways.”

The resolution cited some specific instances when Obama failed his duties as president, including releasing five Taliban combatants in exchange for captive U.S. soldier Bowe Bergdahl. It also accused Obama of lying when he told Americans that they can keep their insurance under Obamacare, a report by the Sioux Falls Argus Leader noted.

Allen Unruh, a political activist who sponsored the resolution, said it is more of a symbolic measure than a true attempt to impeach President Obama. But he said the grievances are very real.

“I’ve got a thick book on impeachable offenses of the president,” Unruh said.

The impeachment resolution was not unanimously supported. Some delegates opposed it, saying it made the Republican Party look petty. But it ultimately passed by a vote of 191 to 176.

Democrats in South Dakota seized on the impeach Obama resolution, calling it a waste of time when more important matters are at hand.

South Dakota Democratic Party Chair Deb Knecht said the resolution shows that the Republican Part has been hijacked by far-right activists.

She noted:

“The South Dakota Republican Party has had many opportunities to put working families and the middle class first, but instead they want to impeach the President. Make no mistake – tea party politics have taken over the SDGOP.

“Let’s be clear: out of touch tea party politics aren’t going to create good jobs, protect the middle class or grow the economy.”

Other Republicans outside of South Dakota have pushed to impeach President Obama. A campaign called Operation American Spring has been gaining steam in an attempt to impeach Obama, and even some Democrats have suggested articles of impeachment against the president.
