14-Year-Old Boy Charged As An Adult In Rape Of 8-Year-Old Cousin

A 14-year-old boy is being charged as an adult in Baltimore, Maryland. Solomon Pule is accused of raping his 8-year-old cousin and threatened her with a pair of scissors. Authorities said the assault was reported by Solomon’s mother.

The unidentified woman said she left the room to put her 2-year-old son down for a nap. While she was gone, Solomon and his cousin were supposed to be cleaning the living room. The mother said she returned to the room as both children were being far “too quiet.”

The mother said she was horrified to find her son raping his young cousin. According to the probable cause warrant, Solomon was on top of his cousin and both children were partially undressed. The mother said she observed a pair of scissors on the love seat next to the children.

During a police interview, the 8-year-old girl said her cousin threatened to cut her with the scissors if she made any noise. She also confirmed that “he shoved his thing” inside her.

Following the mother’s report, Baltimore City Police arrested Solomon Pule for rape. As reported by CBS News, authorities said Solomon admitted raping his cousin during interrogation. Officials have now confirmed the 14-year-old boy will be charged as an adult.

Solomon Pule was arrested and transported to the Baltimore City Detention Center. He is charged with first and second-degree rape.

Although it is uncommon for a young teen to be charged as an adult, it is a startling reality. Those who are convicted as an adult are no longer subject to protections extended to juveniles. Sentences will be served in an adult prison and the crime will become part of the teen’s public criminal record.

In Maryland, any child between the ages of 14 and 18 can be charged as an adult if they have “committed a crime that, if committed by an adult, would be punishable by death or life in prison.”

Maryland law also allows children age 16 and over, to be charged as an adult for abduction, kidnapping, murder, rape, robbery, and crimes involving weapons.

Although the rape of a child is heinous, charging a 14-year-old as an adult remains controversial. Some argue that an adult prison is far too harsh and dangerous for a young teen. Others argue that the punishment clearly fits the crime.

It is an incredibly difficult situation, specifically for parents. Solomon Pule’s mother made the right decision. However, it certainly broke her heart. As her 14-year-old son is being charged as an adult, he could spend the rest of his life in prison.
