WWE Reportedly Won’t Reveal The Undertaker’s ‘WrestleMania 33’ Opponent During His Appearance On ‘SmackDown’

From the archive: published Nov 15, 2016, 9 years ago. Details may have changed since.

WWE legend The Undertaker will make his first appearance since WrestleMania 32 on tonight’s edition of SmackDown, and the question is, what will his role be on the show? Some think we’ll get a hint at who his opponent will be at WrestleMania 33, but, according to Cageside Seats , WWE isn’t planning to reveal The Deadman’s opponent for next spring’s big event tonight.

Apparently, WWE’s plan for The Undertaker on tonight’s show is for him to get attacked by a couple of undercard wrestlers, which will lead to him destroying all of them. It’s unclear which undercard wrestlers he will end up destroying, but as of right now, that’s the plan.

The Cageside Seats “rumor roundup” article contradicts an earlier report made by Ringside News , which suggested that The Undertaker was going to be confronted by the newest member of the Wyatt Family, Randy Orton.

As of right now, there are three possible opponents for The Undertaker at WrestleMania 33 — AJ Styles, John Cena, and the aforementioned Randy Orton.

While WWE may not be planning to hint at who The Undertaker will be in the ring with at WrestleMania 33, they may hint at what he’ll be doing at the 2017 Royal Rumble, as he’s expected to be part of the event, along with fellow WWE legends “Stone Cold” Steve Austin and Shawn Michaels.

What will The Undertaker do at the Royal Rumble event? Well, as of right now, that question hasn’t been answered. But, according to SportsKeeda , we may see an Undertaker vs. AJ Styles match at the event. If the rumor turns out to be true, the people who were hoping to see Styles take on Shawn Michaels will be crushed. But, at least WWE will give us a match that is almost as interesting.

If the AJ Styles vs. Undertaker rumor doesn’t end up being true, then we could see The Deadman as one of the surprise entrants in next year’s Rumble match. It’s been quite some time since he’s been involved in WWE’s annual 30-man match, and him entering the match as a surprise would almost certainly be met with a massive response from the live crowd at the Alamodome.

There was some concern about The Undertaker’s status for WrestleMania 33 due to a photo that was posted on Twitter, which showed The Deadman using crutches. It was later reported by PW Insider that The Phenom had undergone hip surgery, and that he was using crutches during his recovery and rehab. We don’t know exactly when he underwent surgery, but we do know that he’s no longer using crutches. Does that mean he’s fully recovered? Probably not.

The Undertaker isn’t expected, nor is he advertised to appear at this Sunday’s Survivor Series show. Could his appearance lead to him doing a match on the show? Sure. But there’s really no one out there for him to face, other than John Cena, who is expected to be at the event. But, WWE would probably like to have a longer build for a high profile match like that.

It’ll be interesting to see what WWE decides to do with The Undertaker on tonight’s show. Will he be confronted by John Cena or Randy Orton? Will he have a face-to-face meeting with Shane McMahon, who was his opponent at this past year’s WrestleMania? Or, will the AJ Styles dream match become a reality?

After tonight, you shouldn’t expect to see or hear from The Undertaker until the beginning of next year, as WWE begins the build towards the Royal Rumble show and the build towards their biggest show of the year, WrestleMania 33.
