We’re three days away from WWE’s final pay-per-view of the year — Roadblock: End of the Line — and we’re still not exactly sure which match will be the show’s main event. Many are predicting that the Universal Championship match between Kevin Owens and Roman Reigns will go on last, and it might. However, there’s one match that’s arguably bigger than the champion vs. champion match between KO and Roman, and that’s the Iron Man match between Charlotte Flair and Sasha Banks.
WWE is billing the Sasha vs. Charlotte showdown as the final match in their long, and heated rivalry, which is why the show has the subtitle End of the Line . Of course, WWE has already had the two women main event a show, as they were the main event of this past October’s Hell in a Cell show. Having the women main event a second show may not be as big, but the match — which is scheduled to go 30 minutes — has the potential to be a lot better than their Cell match was.
One thing that could block the women going on last is that, according to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter , Vince McMahon regretted having Charlotte and Sasha main event the October show, because he felt like they under-performed in the match. Also, the match wasn’t the show’s original main event, and the WWE chairman had to be talked into letting the Women’s Championship match close the show. As mentioned, he may not be willing to let someone talk him into letting Sasha and Charlotte main event the last pay-per-view of 2016.
We did see Sasha and Bayley have an iron man match down in NXT in October of last year, but this Sunday will mark the first time that the women have had an iron man match on WWE’s main roster. So, it’s a pretty big deal, and unlike Owens vs. Reigns, it’s something that we haven’t seen before. Furthermore, as previously mentioned, this will be a blow-off match between Raw’s two top women, and because of that, it deserves to be in the main event spot.
The Charlotte vs. Sasha match on Sunday is the only “gimmick match” on the show, and on a recent episode of Wrestling Observer Live , it was reported that WWE was always planning something other than just a normal singles match for the women at Roadblock . In fact, they were considering having Sasha and Charlotte battle for the Women’s Championship in a ladder match, but they ultimately decided to go with an Iron Man match.
Dave Meltzer recently reported that if Sasha Banks wins on Sunday, she’ll begin a feud with Nia Jax, who hasn’t been on television much over the last couple of weeks.
Also, according to Meltzer, Charlotte will begin a feud with Bayley after Sunday night, which could last all the way through WrestleMania 33 .
As of this writing, the odds for the Charlotte Flair vs. Sasha Banks match haven’t been released, but it’s likely that Sasha will walk out of the event with the Women’s Championship simply because this is the end of the rivalry. If Sasha does win, it’ll mark the first time that Charlotte has lost on pay-per-view since she’s been called up to the main roster.
There are really only two matches that are capable of being the main event of this Sunday’s show — Sasha Banks vs. Charlotte Flair, and Roman Reigns vs. Kevin Owens. As previously mentioned, the former is a much bigger deal than the latter, and because of that, it’ll likely be the main event of WWE’s final big show of the year.
