It wasn’t the most highly advertised or touted WWE pay-per-view event, but that didn’t stop a Chicago crowd from getting fired up as they watched CM Punk come back into action and John Cena battle against Ryback.
Championships changed hands, the crowd was happy, and the matches were electric.
Here are the WWE Payback results:
Sheamus defeats Damien Sandow: The first match of the night was the rather standard fare as Sandown and Sheamus warmed up the crowd in preparation for a championship match.
Intercontinental Championship: Curtis Axel defeats Wade Barrett (c) and The Miz.
AJ Lee defeated Kaitlyn (c) in the Divas champsionship.
Vying for the United States Championship was Dean Ambrose (c), who defeated Kane by way of count out.
Dolph Ziggler (c) was next to fall in a World Heavyweight championship to Alberto Del Rio.
In one of the events everyone was waiting for, CM Punk pulled off a big win against Chris Jericho. CM Punk appeared at WWE Payback for his first match following a month long layoff. Punk’s return occurred in front of his supportive hometown fans, which seemed to breath life into his performance. The match lasted for 21 minutes as the men battled through various attacks and near-falls. CM Punk and Chris Jericho both managed the upper hand at different times, but ultimately Jericho couldn’t hold off his competitor.
The Tag Team Championship went to Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns (c) who defeated Daniel Bryan and Randy Orton.
Finally, in the match of the night, John Cena took on Ryback and claimed victory in both the Tables Match and Ambulance Match. The match got off to a hectic start when Ryback slapped Antonio Cesaro. That attack led to Cena flying from the top rope and knocking over a giant pile of lumberjacks. Ryback managed to battle back to take the first match, but Cena proved a tough competitor as the two men went back-and-forth from outside and inside the ring. By the end of the match, the men were beating one another with crutches, chairs, and pieces of the ambulance.
When all was said and done, the WWE Payback results were right around what we expected and the night was even more entertaining than we would have thought.
