Just a few weeks remain until professional wrestling legend Sting is enshrined into immortality as he’s inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame. Rumors about his in-ring future have been running rampant, most suggesting that he will officially announce his retirement at some point.
TMZ originally reported that Sting would be hanging up the boots and wiping off the face paint due to spinal stenosis. The report claimed that Sting continuing to wrestle would be “too risky” given his condition. However, “The Icon” continues to downplay those rumors.
In a new interview with IGN, Sting talked about several topics heading into WrestleMania 32. Playing up to his wrestling character, he confirmed that the only thing that’s for sure about Sting is that nothing is for sure.
“That is one of those rumors floating around, yes. [laughs] TMZ put something out and, again, I still have a dream inside of me. And it’s not dead yet.”
Since debuting with WWE at Survivor Series 2014, Sting has participated in a total of four matches. The first was a losing effort at WrestleMania 31 against Triple H. His next match was against the Big Show on the September 14, 2015, edition of RAW that eventually turned into a tag team match (Sting/John Cena vs. Big Show/Seth Rollins). Just a few weeks later, Sting faced Rollins for the WWE World Heavyweight championship at Night of Champions.
“Just fantastic. Awesome. Incredible. It was WrestleMania and Triple H. And a lot of fans, if I understand what you’re trying to say here, sort of feel ‘Are you kind of disappointed that you lost two times?’ No, I’m not. I look back and say ‘Wow, great opponent in Triple H. Biggest stage and platform of them all.’ You know, wrestling fans remember me wrestling there. I don’t think they’re walking away thinking it sucked because I should have won. Maybe for a minute. But more so they’ll remember that I was at WrestleMania. And then to have a world title match against Seth? Wow. I’ve been world champion many times, so it didn’t bother me.”
In regards to his health, Sting mentioned that he’s “feeling completely normal” and continues to hit the gym and train hard. It was believed that the severity of the injury he suffered would eventually require surgery but he is yet to go under the knife. The hope is to try every non-surgical method to improve the condition of his neck/back — both of which Sting notes are not causing him pain.
While it may be a risk for Sting to wrestle again, a match against The Undertaker — a wrestling fan’s dream for nearly two decades — still motivates him to continue his in-ring career.
“The mystique of both of us and all that. I just think that we could do some pretty cool stuff that would compliment each other. And it would be extremely entertaining. I’ve had these visions and these ideas in my head for a while. And, again, it’s a dream still.”
