When Cody Rhodes asked for and was granted his release from the WWE, he left a fun message on Twitter where he revealed his list of post-WWE dream opponents. Names on there included Ring of Honor stars like Adam Cole and the Young Bucks and TNA stars like Mike Bennett and Trevor Lee. However, there was one name on Cody’s list that seemed like a long shot, and ironically, that is who Rhodes’ first announced post-WWE match will be against.
Yahoo reported that Cody Rhodes has been booked to wrestle The Olympic gold medalist Kurt Angle on August 27, just one week after Rhodes’ WWE non-compete clause ends. The match will take place for Northeast Wrestling in New York. Another big match taking place on that wrestling show features former WWE and TNA world champion Jeff Hardy taking on Jushin Thunder Liger.

As for Cody Rhodes, this is a huge dream match for the second generation star as he starts to rebuild his career on the independent circuit. Cody was groomed to be a major star in the WWE, but the company failed to really take advantage of his talents. Rhodes went through numerous cartoon gimmicks, and he excelled at all of them.
Even when the WWE gave Rhodes his brother’s gimmick and called him Stardust, Cody took the role and did the best he could with it. However, things grew rough for Rhodes at the end, and he finally lost his cool and asked for his release. The rumors are that Rhodes’ release was not amicable, and then Cody went off on the writers for Raw and SmackDown, saying neither man would listen to talent, while one of them spent all their time hitting on NXT female wrestlers.
Cody Rhodes entered the WWE when he originally teamed with Hardcore Holly and won the WWE tag team titles. Cody then came out to support Randy Orton alongside another legacy star in Ted DiBiase Jr. and won the tag titles with him as well. It was a nice start for Rhodes but his career went on a roller coaster ride after that.
Rhodes career had high points, such as his tag team with Damien Sandow, called the Rhodes Scholars, and his impressive singles run as Dashing Cody Rhodes, where he won two Intercontinental titles. Cody also formed a great tag team with his brother Goldust, and they won the WWE tag team titles twice. However, when Cody became Stardust, his career really fell apart, and no one seemed to take Rhodes seriously anymore.

That led to Cody Rhodes asking for his released, and now he gets to wrestle one of his dream matches. Out of everyone on his list, Kurt Angle seemed the most unlikely. Angle had left TNA Impact Wrestling and made it sound like he was going to sit out for the next year as he determined his next career move. However, a chance to wrestle Rhodes might have seemed too good to pass up.
According to Cody Rhodes’ list, there are a number of major stars he still wants to face. Rhodes would need to sign a deal with Ring of Honor or Evolve to get to wrestle names like Adam Cole or The Young Bucks. The Roderick Strong match would be amazing and could take place anywhere. Wrestling names like “The Miracle” Mike Bennett and Chris Hero could also be exciting for Rhodes and his fans.
Fans should keep an eye on Cody Rhodes’ Twitter account for more information, as that is where Cody shared the news that he will be wrestling Kurt Angle. The matches for Cody will take place all over the country, and he might even head overseas for some shows. With his new freedom from the WWE, the future is bright for Cody Rhodes as he works to achieve his wrestling dreams.
