Why hello there, StarCraft II Collector’s Edition

Blizzard isn’t just targeting StarCraft fans with the release of StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty later this year: it’s also taking aim at World of Warcraft players.

The company today revealed the StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty Collector’s Edition, complete with an in-game Thor World of Warcraft pet. Crafty stuff, but I bet WoW ers, a notoriously dedicated bunch, will cough up.

The collector’s set will retail for $100, but that’s actually pretty great value when you see what it comes with: a 176-page art book containing concept art and illustrations, a soundtrack CD with 14 tracks, and even a 2GB USB flash drive loaded with the original StarCraft and the StarCraft: Brood War expansion.

And the aforementioned pet, of course. It’s all lovingly presented in the swish box you see above, for just $40 more than the standard release. As special editions go, it’s quite tasty.

We won’t have a StarCraft II release date for a few more weeks yet, though it should be out by the time BlizzCon 2010 opens its doors .
