It’s eight years to the day since one of the greatest matches in cricket history took place between Australia and South Africa in Johannesburg.
Set the seemingly impossible task of beating Australia’s score of 434 runs, South Africa succeeded with only one ball left to bowl.
The same teams are facing each other today at Kingsmead, Durban, but the format of the match is different this time.
A T20 game is completed in about three hours, with each innings lasting around 75–90 minutes. The original thinking behind the creation of this form of cricket was to bring the game closer to the time-span of other popular team sports.
It was introduced to create a form of the game which would be attractive to spectators at the ground and viewers on TV or online. It has proven to be very successful.
Shane Watson claims the present Australia squad to be the most balanced side he has ever been a part of.
“This is the best squad we’ve ever assembled in T20 cricket. We’ve got the most balanced side I’ve ever been involved in. We really do have firepower in our batting order, all the way down to No.10.
We’ve got high-quality opening bowlers, death bowlers and spinners. We have versatility. In all conditions, against any opposition we can match up really well.
T20 cricket is fickle, but if you have a lot of match-winners in your team you’ve got more of a chance of it being someone’s day.”
The South African captain, Faf du Plessis, said:
“The success of Tahir in the T20 World Cup is going to hugely determine how well we do. I know conditions in Durban probably don’t suit him – it’s wet, raining and the ball will be a bit slippery.
But it doesn’t matter how well or how badly he bowls here, it won’t change how important he is for us in Bangladesh.”
The teams will be selected from the following players.

George Bailey (Captain) Dan Christian Nathan Coulter-Nile James Faulkner Aaron Finch Brad Haddin Brad Hodge Brad Hogg Glenn Maxwell James Muirhead Mitchell Johnson Mitchell Starc David Warner Shane Watson Cameron White
