With the US no longer the fattest country, Mexico has taken the number one spot with its high overweight and obesity rates.
As previously reported by The Inquisitr , obesity is being called a disease by the AMA .
Obesity is where a person’s body mass index (BMI) is higher than 30, although there are special cases where body builders would be considered “fat” because of their high muscle density. A good percentage of the adult population in North America tends to be overweight, as well.
Studies show Americans tend to think they are eating less than they really are. The amount of fast food eaten in America is said to be part of the problem , although the McDonald’s CEO claims he lost 20 pounds on a McDiet . Mayors in major cities have proposed fighting obesity by banning soda purchases with food stamps .
US No Longer Fattest Country… Mexico?
Dr. Abelardo Avila, a physician with Mexico’s National Nutrition Institute, explains how Mexico made the US no longer the fattest country :
“The same people who are malnourished are the ones who are becoming obese. In the poor classes we have obese parents and malnourished children. The worst thing is the children are becoming programmed for obesity. It’s a very serious epidemic.”
Reports say 32.8 percent of Mexican adults are now obese, narrowly beating out the US obesity rate of 31.8 percent. Diabetes and cardiovascular illnesses are on the rise. Urbanization has supposedly led to this growth in obesity rates, where jobs in the city do not require as much physical labor. Cheap food also tends to be high in calories.
Meanwhile, Hostess went bankrupt but the Twinkies are coming back next week. So, while the US is no longer the fattest country now, perhaps it’ll make a comeback.
