Trayvon Martin is a civil rights icon and belongs in the history books at least according to father Tracy Martin and mother Sybrina Fulton .

In a related report by The Inquisitr , so-called Trayvon Martin gun control laws have been losing to the expansion of the Stand Your Ground laws . Ironically, the now infamous law was never used in the defense of George Zimmerman, but Martin’s surviving family members and lawyer Benjamin Crump have been flying all over the nation demanding that stronger gun control laws be created.

Speaking as a guest speaker at Nassau Community College , Mr. Martin claimed people should ignore the unflattering material found on Trayvon’s Twitter account . He also claims Trayvon should be remembered for galvanizing the civil rights movement into action:

“We want him to be known as that child of central Florida who galvanized the country. We would like to see his name in the history books of modern days, taking his place beside Emmett Till [though] Emmett Till has a legacy I don’t think any African-American child will surpass.”

Even five decades later the death of 14-year-old Emmitt Till is still controversial. It was claimed that 21-year-old Carolyn Bryant had her arm grabbed by Till, who demanded a date from her. When she pulled away, Till supposedly said, “What’s the matter, baby, can’t you take it?” He also allegedly used an expletive to explain how he’d had sex with white women before. Till’s cousin, Simeon Wright, disputes this story and claims there was not any “lecherous conversation,” but supposedly the woman was scared enough she ran to get a gun in her car.

Regardless of the true story, Till was beaten, had one eye gouged out, and was shot in the head. His attackers then disposed of his body by throwing it in a river while anchored down by a weight that was tied to the boy’s neck with barbed wire. When the mutilated body was found days later a public funeral allowed thousands to view his horrible state. Similar to how a young Trayvon Martin in a hoodie is often pictured by the media, Till was shown in newspapers with a flattering photo. The reaction to the funeral caused the African American civil rights movement to take notice and from then on the case has been known in history as being a major influence, especially since the murderers admitted to the deed later on but could not be arrested due to double jeopardy laws.

Do you think Tracy Martin is fair to compare his son Trayvon Martin to Emmett Till in order to advance the cause of increasing gun control laws?
