Tom Cruise has officially signed on for Mission Impossible 5 , but with the franchise star in the bag, everyone is wondering who will direct IMF Agent Ethan Hunt’s latest adventure.
Film outlets are in a bit of a twist over MI:V ‘s director, who has yet to be selected. It’s not all bad, though. Every single Mission Impossible film has had a different director. They’re a bit like James Bond films that way, with the only consistent creative links between the films being Cruise, Paula Wagner (producer, 1-3) and J.J. Abrams (director, 3, producer, 4).
Mission Impossible 5 is also still in its very early stages. The only piece of furniture nailed to the ground so far is Cruise. The film still needs a script, heck, a plot. And so far, we haven’t heard how much Abrams or his Bad Robot production company are putting into the film (they’re too busy with a film set a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away).
Though Brad Bird did a phenomenal job with Ghost Protocol, no one is really talking about bringing him back right now. Smart money is on Paramount selecting another high-profile and talented director to give it a go (like we said, James Bond-style).
Deadline reports that Christopher McQuarrie’s name is being tossed around as a possibility. Most recently directing Jack Reacher, another Cruise action vehicle, McQuarrie and Cruise have been frequent collaborators for a long time now, and there might not be anyone better suited for Mission Impossible 5 at the moment.
Whoever is selected to direct the latest action flick is taking on a $2 billion franchise. No pressure.
Who do you think would be a good director for Mission Impossible 5?
