Tom Cruise’s quick divorce settlement with ex Katie Holmes wasn’t rushed to hide any “secrets” the actor may be protecting, contrary to early reports.
Shortly after the announcement that Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes were soon to divorce, media outlets including IQ predicted a messy, protracted battle, particularly surrounding custody rights over the couple’s daughter, Suri Cruise. That turned out to not be the case, as the divorce was settled both quickly and quietly with each party seemingly getting what they want (relatively speaking) and continuous rep-rejections from both Cruise and Holmes’ respective camps of media speculation regarding the various reasons for divorce (e.g. Scientology’s hold over Cruise) or restrictions stemming from the divorce settlement (e.g. supervised tome for Cruise with Suri to make sure he’s not “Thetan-ing” her).
Tom Cruise’s lawyer, Bert Fields, is the latest to clear up media confusion regarding the divorce, particularly that the settlement went so quickly because Cruise was afraid Holmes would reveal the actor’s precious “secrets” in the media deluge of drawn-out settlement. “Tom had nothing to hide,” he told TMZ , “and did nothing in the agreement to hide anything. People are just making this stuff up.”
Regarding custody arrangements, Cruise is indeed set to have “significant” contact with daughter, Suri. “Tom will definitely have a meaningful relationship with his daughter, but I can’t talk about specifics of the agreement,” Fields said. Suri was apparently Tom’s main concern in the settlement, with Fields saying that the actor was “pleased we could work out how Suri will be treated and dealt with.”
And Tom’s feelings about his ex Katie Holmes? “I don’t think Tom is bitter. He’s sad it came to this,” said Fields, adding, “The media firestorm which is replete with bogus information is unpleasant for him.”
Though Cruise may not have had anything to hide, reports are still coming out alleging that Katie Holmes had plenty to keep to herself. IQ reported that she had been using a disposable cell phone to arrange her divorce , and Us Weekly detailed a “secret friendship” between the actress and Tom’s previous ex, Nicole Kidman. Holmes was reportedly receiving advice from Kidman regarding the best options for ensuring full custody of her daughter.
