This year will see more mobile devices than human beings

As we approach the 7 billion mark of people living on this planet it is kind of hard to imagine that this year will also see more mobile devices in action than there are human beings; and going forward this gap becomes even more pronounced as 2016 will see a world population of 7.4 billion but over 10 billion mobile connected devices.

This is one of the gems from a new study from Cisco called Global Mobile Data Traffic Forecast Update where we also found out that mobile traffic grew by more than two-fold in 2011, and is the fourth year in a row that we have seen mobile traffic double.

A few more interesting facts from the report:

  • Users with 4G connection generated 28 times more traffic than non 4G
  • 2011 mobile traffic is eight times the size of the entire global internet in 2000
  • 4G traffic represents 0.2 percent of mobile connection but accounts for 6 percent of all mobile traffic

While this isn’t the imminent take over of world by some science fiction based Skynet it does show that mobile is going to be one of the biggest movers of Web traffic for a very long time.
