If anyone tells you that fans can’t do as good as a job as the so-called pro’s and their big budget films you can tell them they are full of it and point them to this gem of a fan made movie. The Hunt for Gollum has to be as good – if not better – than some of the distributed movies that have been made. This is a 35 minute movie with excellently choreographed swordfights, Orcs that look as good as any Orc from Lord of the Rings and Elves that would make Rivendale proud.

This fan made movie was shot in three days in September 2007 with a reported budget of $4,500 USD that due to copyright reasons is available for you to watch for free – or at least until New Line Cinema decides to shut it down. From the film’s About page

About The Hunt For Gollum is an unofficial not for profit short film by a group of enthusiast filmmakers. As a Lord of the Rings Fan Film, we are not affiliated with the Tolkien Estate or New Line Cinema and are producing this project as an entirely non commercial film. As with other fan films we are making this purely for the enjoyment of the material and the experience of making a high quality low budget film.

So Far… Production began in early 2007 when writer-director Chris Bouchard started adapting the script from the Appendices of The Lord of the Rings. Since then, the first three days of filming were completed in September 2007 on location in N Wales. Free Distribution As a non-profit production, the entire film will be released online for FREE download only on the internet on www.hunt4gollum.com

I just finished watching the movie myself and I am frikken impressed and readily admit that I enjoyed it very much. I even have bookmarked it so I can watch it again at some point soon. To give you an idea of how good of a quality the movie is I’ve grabbed some screen shots for you to look at.

You can watch the movie yourself here at Daily Motion

A big hat tip to both Kent Newsome and the folks at Newarama for point me to this beauty, but an even bigger thanks to everyone involved in making The Hunt for Gollum.
