Officers responding to a wellness check at a home in Alvin, Texas, found Jessica Taylor Sullivan deceased in her bathtub, with signs of trauma suggesting she had been there for some time. Rigor mortis had already set in when police arrived.
Sullivan’s mother had requested the wellness check. When officers arrived, two of Sullivan’s younger children answered the door. The door frame showed signs of a broken lock, though officers could not determine how recent the damage was.
After waiting for Sullivan to emerge, officers escorted the children to their room before searching the home. Sullivan was found in the bathtub, partially submerged, with a wound consistent with significant blood loss.
The medical examiner ruled her death a homicide, caused by drowning and contributory strangulation asphyxia.
Investigators brought Sullivan’s husband, Brandon Tyrone Garrett, in for questioning. Garrett had checked himself into a mental health facility around the time of his wife’s death. During questioning, officers noted he appeared detached and focused on peripheral details rather than his wife’s death.
As the interview progressed, Garrett became visibly distressed and claimed how he had strangled her.
Garrett subsequently confessed, detailing how he had strangled her. He was convicted of first-degree murder in 2022 and sentenced to life in prison, with a $10,000 fine.
A video compiled from police bodycam footage and recordings of Garrett’s police interviews was posted to the YouTube channel Bodycam P.O.V. and currently has 1.1 million views, with comments reflecting widespread reaction to the case.
One user wrote, “Killing your wife on your daughter’s birthday and leaving them without her, it’s beyond devil.” Another commented, “Leaving the children with their mother’s body sends him to a whole new level of hell I hope exists.”
A third user noted, “The number of children losing their mothers to domestic violence is heartbreaking.” A fourth comment read, “This is a monster. Killed their mother, his wife, and left her body their for the young children to find. Pure evil.”
