A Texas woman, who is going back the name Jane Doe, has sued the Lottery Commission after she did not receive her prize of $83.5 million, which she won through a winning ticket. As reported by CNN, the woman has claimed that though she won the ticket three months ago, she has not received her prize.

She also mentioned that she had purchased the tickets through lottery courier, a controversial service that allows people to buy lottery tickets virtually. As reported by The Mirror US, “Jane Doe was participating in the ‘Lotto Texas’ game.

She bought her ticket on Feb. 17 on the Jackpocket app, and the numbers she paid for matched the lottery ticket pulled at 10:12 p.m. CT the same day.”

However, after a week of her winning, courier services were banned under Texas Law by the Texas Lottery Commission. This rule went into effect from May 19 and the lawsuit filed by Jane Doe mentioned, “We all know the Commission is not allowed to change the rules after the drawing.

But the Commission has apparently tried to do so and relied—at least in part—on this ex post facto announcement to continue to refuse to pay Plaintiff her lottery winnings simply because she utilized a lottery ticket courier service to buy the winning ticket.”

Talking about her situation, the woman said, “Every Texan knows what that should mean when it comes to the lottery – if you win, you should get paid. It shouldn’t take a lawsuit to get paid when you win the lottery. But that’s exactly what has happened here.”

She is also concerned that her rightfully won money might be used by the Lottery Commission to pay other winners. Her lawyers have therefore filed for a temporary injunction so that the Lottery Commission cannot pay any other winner before clearing out the payment of Doe.

Jane Doe’s case shows how winning the lottery is not always a thing of instant enjoyment and can often bring more tension into one’s life. It now remains to be seen if she gets her money after the legal action she has taken.
