Parenting an infant during a teething phase can drive parents to try anything in hopes of soothing their child’s persistent discomfort and likely constant crying.
While natural or ‘homeopathic’ remedies are generally more a waste of money than a danger to your child, a recent recall of a homeopathic teething product has, the FDA says, potential to cause “serious harm” to infants that consume it. Hyland’s Teething Tablets are the subject of a nationwide recall after it was discovered that the product contains high levels of dangerous herb belladonna.
Not only do the Hyland’s Teething Tablets contain possibly toxic levels of belladonna, but they also lack childproof caps, enabling small children to more easily access the tablets. CBS News detailed the symptoms of belladonna toxicity for parents who may have the product in their home:
Parents should a doctor if a child experiences suspicious symptoms after using the tablets. Symptoms of belladonna toxicity include seizures, difficulty breathing, lethargy, excessive sleepiness, muscle weakness, skin flushing, constipation, difficulty urinating, and agitation, according to the FDA.
Parents are urged to discard the product or contact the company for a refund or replacement.
