A Wisconsin teacher’s aide was arrested this week, following after a disturbing video leaked online showing him slamming a 14-year old student to the ground and choking him.

New York Daily News reports that a Bay View High School teacher’s aide in Milwaukee, who has only been identified as a 39-year-old, is seen in a video taking extreme “discipline” on a teenage boy. The teacher’s assistant, wearing a blue button-down shirt and jeans, pushes a boy wearing a red jersey and black pants so hard that the student falls backwards over chairs and a desk.

While the student was on the ground, the aide placed a hand around the boy’s neck and start screaming profanities at him. The teen attempted to get out of the situation by throwing his arms up in defense, but the older man overpowered him and pushed the student’s head onto the concrete floor.

According to the Milwaukee Police, the aide was arrested for physical abuse of a child, but since he’s yet to be formally charged, his name hasn’t been released.

People reports that the video was filmed on Wednesday during a ninth grade Biology class. The aide is known to be mean and rude to students, according to James Sinkey, the grandparent of one of this student’s in the aide’s class. Sinkey said he’s glad the aide was arrested.

“They should have walked him out and locked him up right then and there. You don’t have to do nothing like that to a 14-year-old unless he was pulling out a knife or a gun.”

Although the video doesn’t portray what exactly led up to the incident, students in the classroom who witnessed the assault stated that the aide and the student in the red jersey were bickering back and forth because the teen was talking back. According to one of the students who witnessed the attack:

“[The student] was talking stuff and then the teacher came, slammed him on the chair, and started choking him saying you don’t know who you’re [expletive] messing with.”

The Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) district released a public statement shortly after learning of the incident and assured parents that the aide will face consequences for his actions.

“MPS finds this incident deeply disturbing. As soon as the school administration was notified of the incident, the Milwaukee Police Department was contacted, and the staff member was removed from the classroom. We are cooperating with MPD. This staff member – who is a paraprofessional (teacher aide) – faces disciplinary action, including termination.”

Online reactions to the video show that some people are horrified by what they saw, while others aren’t so quick to condemn the aide. One YouTube viewer stated that the teacher should receive a raise for taking care of the problem, while another YouTube user said that lack of parenting at home is what causes incidents such as these to happen in the first place.

Regardless, Wisconsin laws, under Statutes 948.03, states that it’s a felony to cause physical harm to a minor, whether intentionally, recklessly, or both. Physical abuse of a child in Wisconsin is defined as:

“Physical injury inflicted on child other than by accidental means, sexual abuse/exploitation, emotional damage, (harm to child’s psychological or intellectual functioning which is exhibited by anxiety, depression, or other outward behavior).”

The student was treated at a local hospital for minor injuries. He’s been since released.

Meanwhile, the teacher’s aide is still under investigation. The details are expected to be turned over the to the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s office when complete.
