A new study conducted by the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project has concluded that 1 in 10 American adults now own an iPad or simlar tablet device marking the first time that tablets have overtaken e-readers in terms of sales.
The study also found that while 12 percent of respondents admitted to owning an e-reader in May only 9 percent of respondents said they owned one by October.
As Pew researcher Kristen Purcell points out in regards to e-reader ownership:
“I suspect after the holidays, we’re going to see this number back up.”
It’s also important to point out that many traditional e-readers have taken on tablet qualities which has begun to classify those devices in the tablet sector such as the Nook Color and Kindle Fire devices which offer traditional e-reader capabilities with full tablet functions which has placed them in the tablet count.
Skeptics shouldn’t be counting out e-readers just yet as recent studies have shown that many American homes have both e-readers and tablets which are used for very different purposes dependent upon the users needs.
In the meantime Gamestop began offering 3 different gaming tablets on Thursday proving that the devices are here to stay and ultimately expand their reach.
