With all of the talk that Star Wars: The Old Republic ‘s roughly 1.7 million-strong subscriber base was starting to decline, BioWare kept insisting in interviews that everything was going fine in SWTOR . Unfortunately, that’s not really the case.
During EA’s financial call yesterday, the company confirmed everyone’s suspicion– Star Wars: The Old Republic now has an active subscriber count of 1.3 million, down a fairly sharp 400,000 from the 1.7 million figure we heard from the company in March.
When you think back on BioWare’s comments over the past month or so, this news is especially disappointing. Just last week, SWTOR designer Daniel Erickson said that activity levels have actually gone up since the release of patch 1.2.
Before that, EA was claiming that the perceived drop in Star Wars: The Old Republic ‘s subscriber base was due to a lower number of concurrent users, not a drop in subscribers. This, along with Erickson’s comments, doesn’t exactly sound true now that we have the latest numbers.
I thoroughly enjoyed Star Wars: The Old Republic all the way up to the level cap, and I was hopeful that BioWare would address the concerns of fans and get the end-game content up to where it needed to be. BioWare may be on track to do that, and I’d say patch 1.2 was a good start, but it looks like a good chunk of their former players are no longer willing to wait it out.
