With the ICC World Twenty20 2016 Tournament in full swing, teams know that every single match is important and can’t be taken lightly. On Sunday, Sri Lanka and the West Indies will be taking on one another in a match to see who can stay undefeated. Both teams have already won their first and only match in the Super 10 stage, and a victory this weekend will push them further atop of the standings.
Both teams had convincing victories in their first matches, and they want the upswing to continue. Still, only one team will leave M. Chinnaswamy Stadium with a victory on Sunday. Sri Lanka is hoping that they can defend their championship, but Chris Gayle of the West Indies is going to be hard to stop, as reported by The National.
Sri Lanka won the last World T20 two years ago when the tournament was in Bangladesh, but a lot has changed since then. Batsmen Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara, two key and strong players for the team, are out of the line-up due to retirement.
“Once you bat 15 overs we are some way near to the target (either) we are setting or chasing.”
Simmons believes that type of stat will set them up perfectly for victories.
While the West Indies have put themselves and Gayle out there, Sri Lanka has done everything they can to play well, but fly under the radar. Changes have forced them to play a different game, and they’re happy with being out of the spotlight, especially as the defending champions, per ESPN.
Sri Lanka coach Graham Ford has said that he knows the defending champions are always going to have a target on their backs.
“Very often when you have this kind of tournament, the defending champions have that burden of defending the title. The high expectations of media and fans does create extra pressure. In quite a nice kind of way, quite a lot of that is not present at the moment. With a younger group it’s quite nice not to have that pressure.”
Sunday’s match between Sri Lanka and the West Indies is one that a lot of people have been waiting for. It is the 21st overall match in the ICC World Twenty20 2016 Tournament, and it’s going to be a good one from both sides.
Date: Sunday, March 20, 2016
Time: 19:30 local time (2 p.m. GMT and 10 a.m. ET)
Location: M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru
There are some other options too, but some are for a fee, depending on where you are in the world:
- United States – Willow TV
- South Africa – SuperSport
- United Kingdom/Europe – Sky Sports
This won’t be the only big match-up on Sunday though as South Africa and Afghanistan will also face off as both teams are looking for their first win in the Super 10.
Sitting atop the standings in Group 1 of the Super 10 stage, both Sri Lanka and the West Indies don’t necessarily need this win right now. Still, getting it would pull them further ahead and have them sitting alone atop those standings with a record of 2-0. Make sure not to miss a single minute of the action on the pitch and watch it streaming live online.
