Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark hasn’t been the easiest Broadway musical to participate in given the months of delays, constant injuries and panned reviews, but one good thing has come from it, the shows star Reeve Carney has scored a big time, possibly career changing movie role.

Carney will play singer Jeff Buckley in a new bio-pic directed by Jake Scott, a role he reportedly took away from Twilight’s Robert Pattinson.

Immediately following the casting news Reeve received some big time support from one of the closest people to Jeff Buckely:

“We are over the moon that Reeve has agreed to take on this challenging role,” Buckley’s mother, Mary Guibert, in a statement. “I’ve seen him perform several times … He’s been getting ready for this all his life. It certainly doesn’t hurt that he looks so much like Jeff.”

The Buckley family is doing well on the biopic front, Greetings From Tim Buckley is another film surrounding their musical legacy, focusing on Jeff Buckley’s folk singing dad. In Greetings a young Jeff Buckley is being portrayed by Gossip Girl actor Penn Badgley.

This isn’t the first singing role for Reeve Carney (outside of Spider-Man), he played a small role in 2009’s Spread starring Ashton Kutcher and Anne Heche, however his film roles are still very limited, which makes his casting in such a highly coveted role a welcomed surprise.

Do you think Reeve Carney was a good choice to play Jeff Buckley in the new biopic? It has to be more exciting for him than performing in Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark .
