Smash star Megan Hilty will spend a second season on the recently renewed TV series but in the meantime she’ll also be preparing a new album under a record deal she signed with Sony imprint Masterworks. That imprint happens to be the same label where Smash co-star Katharine McPhee is signed.
Hilty is currently recording demo tracks for her album which doesn’t yet have a release date.
Also on the Masterworks label is Kristin Chenoweth, it’s her work that Hilty says she wants to fashion her own work after. Hilty tells MTV News :
“I look at the people’s careers who I want to emulate, like Audra McDonald, Kristin Chenoweth , Bernadette Peters … They’ve all found the key to longevity in this business, and that is diversifying, doing as many things as possible to keep yourself relevant, and so hopefully I’m on the same track as all those amazing women.”
Hilty definitely has the singing chops to back up a record deal, before appearing on Smash she acted in Wicked and 9 to 5. The actress has also appeared on hit shows including Desperate Housewives, Ugly Betty and even Disney’s hit children’s show The Suite Life of Zack and Cody.
Megan Hilty says she never really thought a TV show of her own and a record deal were on the horizon, noting:
“I always thought Broadway’s the goal, and then I moved out to L.A. with ‘Wicked’ and started doing guest-star spots and little recurring things, and I was like, ‘Well, this is pretty great, I’m kind of digging this.’ ”
