SeaMicro SM10000 Server, Just In Case You Need 512 Atom Processors

Taking a look at the SeaMicro SM10000 is pretty much like staring at any standard server, with one exception, inside the meshed door sits the capability of holding Qty. 512 1.6GHz Intel Atom Z530 processors on a 10U rack-mount unit.

SeaMicro believes the server can replace forty 1U regular servers. I reckon it can also be used to create the world’s biggest and most awkward to carry netbook.

Okay so a bunch of Netbook capable processors probably aren’t blowing your socks off, but the real magic is now SeaMicro puts them together with each processor using their own DRAM and then a custom SeaMicro ASIC found on a credit-card sized board. The 8 “compute blocks” are then placed on a 5 x 11 inch mainboard, one of 64 such mainboards on the server.

According to SlashGear :

Then there’s special Dynamic Compute Allocation Technology (DCAT) which balances load across the various CPUs and can dynamically set unused chips into sleep mode.

Connections can then be made using up to 64 gigabit ethernet ports, while users can take advantage of up to 64 hard-drives.

For Green tech users, SeaMicro is promising less than 2 kilowatts of power consumption with no modifications necessary to run applications.

Sorry no word on a price point at this time or an official release date.
