Today show co-host Savannah Guthrie’s personal misfortune has shocked thousands of people. However, it appears that her colleague Tom Llamas is rather unaffected by the tragedy.
It has been more than 20 days since the mysterious disappearance of Savannah’s mother, Nancy Guthrie. The 84-year-old lady has been missing from her Arizona home since January 31. Despite investigations carried out by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), no significant breakthrough has been made in the case so far.
As the Guthrie family continues to receive love and prayers from the public, Savannah’s colleagues at NBC have chosen a different way to show support. Anchors of the media network are wearing yellow ribbons as a symbol of hope as the case still remains open.
According to the Daily Mail, news correspondents from the channel, including Craig Melvin, Hoda Kotb, Al Roker, Carson Daly and Jenna Bush Hager, are wearing those yellow ribbons to show solidarity to Savannah. However, NBC Nightly News anchor Tom Llamas was not seen wearing any of it, sparking questions of rising tensions within the organization.
An insider reportedly said, “In a moment like this, symbolism is everything. If you’re not visibly with the team, people start asking why.”

Another unnamed producer added, “No one is accusing anyone of lacking compassion. But in a high-profile newsroom built on image and unity, even small gestures can carry weight.”
He explained that wearing yellow ribbons is a mark of support for Savannah as she goes through such a tough time. With Llamas choosing not to wear it, this might indicate internal rifts among colleagues. The producer called it an unnecessary crisis at a time when NBC is under close scrutiny.
Besides Llamas, there are reportedly others who have also acted suspiciously regarding Nancy’s disappearance. Another Daily Mail report claims that some employees have suggested the channel should create a new episode of their crime show Dateline, featuring Savannah’s mother’s alleged kidnapping and disappearance.
While such an episode at this time would likely be very successful, the network has decided to tread carefully.
A source said, “Let’s be honest — Dateline wants a hit, and everyone knows this could be the highest-rated episode they’ve ever had.” It’s hard to deny that an episode on the situation would attract a huge audience, but sources say the network wants to be careful not to upset Savannah. However, it has also been reported that behind closed doors and in Savannah’s absence, many employees have ridiculed her bossy behavior. Another report suggested that just before Nancy disappeared, Savannah had undergone vocal cord surgery.
Without her being present in the studio, colleagues reportedly felt more relaxed and were easy-going. A source revealed, “Without Savannah [on air], the vibe shifted immediately. It stopped feeling like a classroom and started feeling like a group of equals. She naturally takes charge, but when she’s gone, everyone else finally breathes. It feels more collaborative, more relaxed. The show feels warmer.”
